Honduras flooding worse than H. Mitch (no replies)

Hello Storm Carib Community!

Blessings on you all for the great work you do in keeping the rest of us informed once the TV cameras go away. (If they show up in the first place.)

My posting may be a little unorthodox because I am posting about tropical storms and not a hurricane, but I want you to be aware of what is going on down in Honduras. They are experiencing extremely heavy rains and the flooding is far worse than during Hurricane Mitch. I will share a few excerpts from a friend's emails who is down there. His name is Chet Thomas and he works for a NGO called Project Global Village.

"We are having very serious problems as a very big part of the Honduran north coast is under water and so is the southern Pacific coast of Honduras. This situation has been caused by a continuous stream of tropical depressions storms that have been hitting Honduras for more than a month. The rains have been continuous and the entire country is saturated with water causing flooding in the low lying areas of the country. We are in one of areas seriously affected – the Comayagua department (county) and also in Belen Gualcho (western Honduras -Celaque Highlands) where a mountain slid down on several villages and created a massive dam in a deep hollow that will eventually break and head down the mountain where there are five to eight villages there are being evacuated.

This has been an emergency that has taken place over approx. three weeks and has been building intensity with rain and flooding upon a country that has been completely saturated with water and over 250,000 persons have been affected. Fortunately the number of deaths was avoided by early evacuations and the number of losses greatly reduced but more than 50,000 families have been displaced and are living in shelters on higher land until the flood waters go back down.

Since there was no major “blood and guts” massive loss of life, the news services have not picked this up and this disaster is not known but the damage is much worse than Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Where I will be needing help is what I feel is the more critical long range effort- that of getting those farmers who have lost all their crops with the flooding, to get back in their fields and plant another crop before the rains are gone for this year. If we can do this within the next two weeks, we can help many of these farmers get out a corn and bean harvest early next year. If we do not do this then all of these families will be facing one year of nothing to eat, with no crops coming out and the cost of that possibility is enormous. To me the best investment that can be made right now is economic reactivation of these farmers to get crops planted in the ground and then afterwards we can work on improving and repairing the water systems, improving and rebuilding the houses, the roads, and other community buildings."

I know that many of you are deeply involved in rebuilding from the numerous hurricanes that hit the Atlantic this year and simply don't have the resources to respond to yet another bout of storm damage but I share this because I know that many of you know what it feels like to be seemingly forgotten by the rest of the world or at least by the media.

If you cannot help financially, all I ask is that you pray for Honduras and keep them in your thoughts as you face your own challenges to rebuild and restore order to your islands.

Here is Chet's email if you wish to contact him about making a donation to help the farmers buy seed to replant while there is still time.

Chester G. Thomas chet@paghonduras.org

Comfort and strength to all of you storm weary citizens of the Caribbean!

thank you and God Bless,
Robin Brumley

(My husband and I have been married for 8 years and we're finally taking one!) Anyway, I've looked at the charts and history of storms for the week of Oct. 6 - 13th and it seems our chances are decent for good weather or at the most, a tropical storm. Can your crystal ball tell us anything more? We are taking a day sail aboard the White Squall II on Thursday, the 9th. I've rented the whole boat as a surprise for my husband. Just wondering if I should lower my hopes of actually getting to sail. Thanks for your wisdom!

Jesse

Fortis Turks and Caicos Restoring Hurricane Service to Customers after Hurricane Ike (no replies)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

St. John’s, NL, Canada – September 8, 2008

Fortis Turks and Caicos Restoring Electricity Service
to Customers after Hurricane Ike

Fortis Turks and Caicos, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fortis Inc. (TSX:FTS), is working to restore service to its customers who were impacted by Hurricane Ike, a category 4 hurricane that struck Turks and Caicos Islands over the weekend.

Fortis Turks and Caicos serves more than 9,000 customers, or 85 per cent of electricity consumers on the Turks and Caicos Islands. It owns and operates an integrated electricity system providing for the generation and distribution of energy on Providenciales, North Caicos, Middle Caicos and South Caicos, with the load on Providenciales normally accounting for 80% of the total.

The assets of Fortis Turks and Caicos are approximately $140 million, representing approximately 1% of the total assets of Fortis.

Management of Fortis Turks and Caicos report that there does not appear to be any substantial damage to its generating facilities. Many of the utility’s major customers on Providenciales remain operational and capable of receiving electricity service, and current demand is approximately 40% of normal. Electricity service has been restored to the hospital, water treatment plant and airport.

Fortis has mobilized its Hurricane Response team to assist Fortis Turks and Caicos in restoring electricity service to its customers as soon as possible. Approximately 30 engineers, technicians and line crew from other Fortis utilities are preparing to leave for Turks and Caicos Islands. A major focus for this group will be to restore electricity service to customers on the islands of North Caicos, Middle Caicos and South Caicos, which were the service areas most impacted by Hurricane Ike. Fortis has extended an offer to the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands to assist with electricity service restoration efforts on islands not served by Fortis Turks and Caicos.

Fortis Turks and Caicos expects to have electricity service restored within three weeks to all of its customers on Providenciales who are capable of receiving service and within six weeks to its customers on other islands.

- 30 -

For more information, please contact:

Donna Hynes
Manager, Investor & Public Relations
Fortis Inc.
Phone: 709.737.2800
Fax: 709.737.5307

Looks like Ike will track thru west Cuba, same area as Gustav.

Best to all,

Mark D

I was on the island for Hanna and saw what it did to Grand Turk. I was lucky to get one of the last flight off the island. I was on the phone all last night with friends from the island as the roof of the Bohio was getting torn off. They had to flee to the Bathroom were the water was rising as the rain came down. It kept rising I was able to contact a Rescue crew and gave them diretions to my friends location. I still dont know if they got Rescued other than a story in CNN about a couple getting saved in the bathroom of a hotel with the roof ripped off. what I'm trying to say is these are all our friends on the island and we need to help.

I going to set up a Donations and Relief effort once I arrive in Canada. I've spoken with local news programs and newspapers to get coverage. Please try in your area.
