Currently when I look at the weather all I see is that there is a greater then 50% possibility of rain over the next ten days. What I am trying to ascertain is whether the rain is constant throughout the day or whether they are just a passing shower. Additionally how much sunshine is there per day? Grateful if anyone could help with the above questions

Many thanks

Jez

Irene came in as a cat 1, but quickly changed over to a tropical storm. Here where I live we got heavy rain and gusts of wind (I have heard approx. 62 mph.) Lots of small branches down. Power outages in the area, but I still have power. Rain has currently stopped. News forecastors are still telling people not to venture out due to winds and falling branches. Major Wires down and Flooding is happening in some area.
I am glad I prepared thanks to all your tips. I believe our winter storms have been worse than what we had with Irene, but I would not want to experience much worse with winds and rain due to hurricanes.

My prayers are with all of you on the islands for the rest of hurricane season.

The time indicated is counted from the time stamp of the advisory. So if the advisory is from 11AM, and it says the storm will be there in 3 hours, it will be 2PM. Any flying debris could be a disaster for you. During IVAN, I moved my car from beneath a tree to a clear area. The wind broke a huge branch off and carried it across to the car and totally flattened the rear end. Flying debris can be one of the biggest hazards during a storm. You need to be in a room or hallway without windows or very small windows. Believe me, once the storm is over and power restored, you will see endless hours of tv coverage showing the damage. Some sites I check show 65 mph winds in our area over Sunday nite. The "cone of uncertainty" is what they tell us to watch and I am in that zone.
I decided not to board the window as there are no trees directly near it, but it is located in a wide open area so hopefully wind gusts will not blow anything into it. Does make me nervous, but will keep my fingers crossed and will just pull the shade and curtain there.
I have all the supplies in. Will turn up my frige right now. I have friends close by and my bf is on the police force 3 towns away so I guess if there is a major problem he would summons help.
Love that saying Taylor!! Do you live in Cayman? I love GC~ go there 2x a yr(was just there in July)....in fact, sent a few care packages after Ivan and went down Dec. after Ivan. I think that is the reason I want to be prepared. I have seen what hurricanes can do and how reports can be a "little" or "alot" off.
Thanks everyone for your advice and kind words.
Re: Boston/ how to prepare? can someone give tips?

Annie:
By preparing ahead of time you will not look silly. As IVAN appraoched our island, the local news did not give any warnings. I got my info from the web and acted accordingly. People thought I was going overboard but when the time came, I had lots of food items, batteries, etc. I had packed important stuff away but was not expecting the magnitude of the storm and lost nearly everything I owned. I did not think to pack extra shoes and had only the pair on my feet left. They were thoroughly soaked and I could not get them dry. As a result, ended up with a nasty foot fungus. Make sure you have boots or extra shoes -- hard soles. Also turn the power on your fridge to the highest setting NOW. This will help to keep things from spoiling a little longer. If you have time, you may wish to consider cooking some of the items in your freezer that will spoil -- chicken, etc and eating that over the next several days while it is cold. Also, fill up your bathtub with water and place a bucket beside for flushing the toilet. Also, as gross as it may seem, remember the saying that we in the islands live with "In this land of sun and fun, we do not flush for number one". As LAV mentioned, it will be really hot after the storm and most trees will no longer have leaves to provide you with shade. Make sure you have a sunhat. Do not panic and try to take each day as it comes. You have many people praying for you.

Re: Boston/ how to prepare? can someone give tips?

Hi Anna,
If you want to board up do, if it makes you more comfortable, don't worry about what others think. If you are alone it makes more sense, as you said mid storm, you don't want to have to be worried about it. Its about flying debris hitting and breaking your windows. After hurricane ivan I whent to my cousins house who didn't have much interior damage but shingle from the neighbours roof was imbedded in her garage wall. So winds are really powerful and can make the smallest item become a misile. I was boarded up before anybody else, and it made me more comfortable. A hurricane is very scary and every bump will make you wonder, but when you are boarded up you can walk freely in your house and not wander if something is going to come through the windows or you are stuck in one location all the time. In Grand Cayman Ivan winds and rain started from about 630pm saturday and we were not able to come out until around 10am monday. So slow moving storms makes time drag on. You want to be as comfortable as possible, as you will want to sleep. Look around you a if there are any trees that could possibly fall on your house, have someone remove that part or the tree if you have to. Do not panic as that will defeat your prep, you'll forget things. Just make your list have a plan and follow that. Set yourself up to be comfortable. Make sure you have books to read or puzzles to past the time. If you have any friends that are also alone have them come over to ride out the storm. If you drink alcohol try not to during the storm, as you would want to be as alert as possible. Best wishes and stay safe.

Re: Boston/ how to prepare? can someone give tips?

Hi Annie

I survived Ivan a Cat5,no power for months. I bought 3 30 gallon garbage bins ( on wheels) and filled them with water, 1 for flushing, 1 for bathing and 1 filtered for doing dishes and cooking just in case my bottled water ran out. Batteries, flash lights, or camping lights. Make lots of ice from now in blocks prefer, last longer keep in the freezer, if the power takes too long to come back tranfer ti igloo. It will be really hot after the hurricane passes with all the salt in the air. To heat soup buy some food warmers (like what caterers use) I was able to make porriage with those while ivan was raging outside. Make sure you have a lot of bleach on hand to help purify water after the storm. We were at my fathers house as we lived in a flood prone area, and he had a huge sliding door, during the storm the men had to move a large book case/entertainment center infront of it as the doors were rattling really bad. I suggest if you don't have heavy furniture to put infront of them to board them up. have an inner room prepared with essentials as a just in case, set up the inner room as your base, away from windows, maynot need it but doesn't hurt. when buying canned goods buy most with pull tabs, easier, buy small boxed milk that have longer shelf life, plus cereal is easy and you will use only one at a time. A battery operated radio is a must so you can keep up with the latest. I was told that I was over doing it in preparations, but in the end it wasn't and were able to help other who wasn't or had lost everything. Oh and if you have a UPS for your computer make sure the battery on it is charged and immediately as the electricity goes out turn it off. and keep it in a dry secure area, after the hurricane passes, you can use it to charge your cell, them turn it back off. If you use it wisely you will have the use of it until the electricity is restored.

The Plate glass window concerns me. Double Glaze mean two sheets layered, and is quite strong; one sheet is vulnerable to shatter. A center strut may assist or use a 2X4 inside brace. Crack a leeward side ( away from the wind) window to relieve pressure. Prepare for water to be blown up under the lower Slider track, use towels to line the area. The fear of power loss is great, though, many forget common sense and candles and gas grills, even charcoal ones are a great hazard. Don't open the freezer at all during the power outages or most could be lost in there.
Re: Boston/ how to prepare? can someone give tips?

Hi Annie:
I went thru IVAN which came ashore as Cat 5 and then downgraded to cat 4 -- not a big difference. I buy tinned fruits, crackers, small bottles or tins of juice, bottled water, tins of tuna, salmon or corned beef. As you may lose power for several days try to buy everything in smaller portions that will not require a fridge. I had no power for 9 months so it was imperative that food stuffs did not need fridge. Also stock up on plastic cutlery, plastic glasses and dishes. That way you don't have to worry about trying to wash dishes. Make sure you have an adequate supply of medications and if you have pets, make sure you have food and water for them. Also remember a can opener, plastic trash bags, several sets of dry clothes. Make sure you have several good flashlights and batteries. Also, gather all of your important documents -- passport, credit cards, birth cert, insurance papers, property deeds, etc and put them in a ziploc bag or plastic file folder. Make sure your cell phone is charged. Have you chosen your secure area? If so, put your supplies there NOW. Do not wait until the storm starts raging around you. As you live in a fairly big city power would most likely be restored within 48 to 72 hours so make sure your supplies will last 72 hours.
Also try to secure treasured items -- photos, jewellry. If you have any outdoor items -- furniture, decorations, etc, bring them inside to avoid flying projectiles. Last but no least, try not to worry which is easier said than done.
You live in an area with good emergency services so things should not be too bad. Good luck.

Boston/ how to prepare? can someone give tips?

I have never been in a hurricane and although we may miss it altogether or be in a hurricane 1 or 2 (the forecastors are just not sure at the moment)..I would like to get prepared in case.

I figure some of you are experts. What non-perishable food items do you get? I saw a list on the net and soup is listed, but if we lose power...how could I make soup. Can someone give some suggestions. Also, in a cat 1 or 2 is it necessary to board your windows? I have big slider windows...so should I be boarding up?

I don't want to go "crazy" if not necessary and look silly, but I do not want to be unprepared.

Thanks.
